Richard Gibbons
“Although I had my schooling in classical painting at the Art Institute of Chicago, I have always brought my architectural background into placing a figure in space. I attempt to go beyond the ‘academic nude’ which does not engage the viewer. The goal for my work is to become engaging by projecting a human sensation that we have all experienced. It could be escaping from something, being in a situation of precarious balance, introversion, tranquility, angst, pensiveness, or even the body as architecture.
Much of my current work is at a small scale. Although difficult to paint, due to crafting implied detail, the result can be a more intimate experience with the viewer, in short, an experience that does not overpower. The relationship with the painting can grow and become deeper with time.”
